Experience the volunteering work while traveling in Costa Rica. Monteverde and Arenal are famous for their majestic beauties that will enchant you but they are also communities with high efforts in sustainability and ecotourism for the preservation of its natural resources. Finish your journey by visiting an animal rescue center in the Caribbean beach town of Puerto Viejo.
Day 1: Pick up upon arrival at the SJO International Airport and transfer to your hotel in the Central Valley. Room and breakfast included.
Day 2 to 6: Morning pickup for a shared shuttle transfer to Monteverde where you’ll participate in a volunteering program. This is focused on giving visitors an extra opportunity to live a more deeply experience with nature giving the importance of preserving existing resources, as well as projecting an effort to care for the community. The activities depend on the demand at the time present in the reserve. Some of the activities that you may participate in are: maintenance work, document translations, orchids’ recovery project, amphibians monitoring, bird counting and registration at the Reserve, environmental education and reforestation and cultural activities.
Monteverde is a world above the coastal town, it’s a high altitude place of cloud forests and coffee plantations, mist and friendly locals. Home of many ecosystems including 100 species of mammals, 400 species of birds, tens of thousands of insect species, and over 2,500 varieties of plants. Dorm and meals included.
Day 7: Morning pickup for a shared bus/boat/bus transfer to Arenal area through the Arenal Lake. Shuttle will drop you off 50 meters from the volunteering center.
Arenal Lake is the largest and the most important lake in Costa Rica, it was man made in 1974 to provide hydroelectric energy for the country. You can find different kinds of resident and migratory birds. Sometimes mammals can be seen in the surroundings, also great views of the Arenal Volcano when it’s clear Dorm and meals included.
Day 8 to 11: Continue with your volunteering experience now in Arenal area. As a volunteer you may contribute with activities such as: trails cleaning, plants caring, attending visitors, work in the tree nursery of native species, collaborate at the butterfly garden, inventorying birds, mammals, insects, reptiles or amphibians and collaborate in the environmental education activities and recycling of solid waste. Dorm and meals included.
Day 12: Early morning pick up for a shuttle transfer to Puerto Viejo de Talamanca. Shuttle will pick you up 50 meters from the volunteering center. Mid-morning and afternoon at leisure to enjoy the beach and town.
Puerto Viejo de Talamanca, a small laidback beach town located on the Caribbean Coast close to the Panamanian border. Apart from its natural jungle-beauty, Puerto Viejo is known for its waves which attract surfers from all over the world due to the high and constant waves. SGL Room and breakfast included.
Day 13: Morning shared tour to a local animal rescue center, this tour will bring you in direct contact with monkeys, wild cats, sloths, anteaters and more. You’ll see monkeys in the trees, birds flying free, and the most venomous snakes in Costa Rica, house in terrariums imitating their natural habitat. Guided by professionals who are extensively trained with these animals. (closed on Sundays). Afternoon at leisure, enjoy the beaches of this beautiful area, go on a snorkeling tour or surf lessons. SGL Room and breakfast included.
Day 14: Morning at leisure to relax, enjoy the town and beach, buy some souvenirs. Afternoon pick up for a shuttle transfer back to the Central Valley. SGL Room and breakfast included.
Day 15: Transfer will be provided to SJO International Airport. You need to be there 3 hours before your flight time.
Casual clothing like: sweater, loose shirts, pants, jeans, shorts, hat or cap and bathing suit. We also recommend: Sunscreen, sunglasses, hiking shoes, small backpack to carry on tours and activities, water bottle, flashlight, bug spray, raincoat, camera and binoculars.
